We recognise that transitions can be difficult for a child with SEN, and we take steps to ensure that any transition is a smooth as possible.
If your child is joining us from another school:
- The SENDCo will liaise with the previous school and speak to their SENDCo
- If your child would be helped by a book/passport to support them in understanding moving on, then one will be made for them.
- Your child will be able to visit our school and stay for a taster session, if this is appropriate. We can also use video conferencing to introduce key staff, hold virtual tours etc if needed.
If your child is moving to another school:
- We will contact the new school's SENDCo and ensure he/she knows about any special arrangements or support that need to be made for your child. Where possible, a planning meeting will take place with the SENDCo from the new school.
- We will make sure that all records about your child are passed on as soon as possible.
- If your child would be helped by a book/passport to support them in understand moving on, then one will be made for them.
When moving classes in school:
- Information will be passed on to the new class teacher in advance and in most cases a planning meeting will take place with the new teacher. All information will be shared with the new teacher.
- If your child would be helped by a book/passport to support them in understand moving on, then one will be made for them.
When moving from Year 6 to Secondary School
- The SENDCo will arrange for the staff from local secondary schools to become involved with your child in Year 5 at Annual Review if appropriate.
- Your child will participate in focused learning relating to aspects of transition, to support their understanding of the changes ahead. This may include a bus journey to the new school, a lunchtime activity etc
- Staff from most local secondary schools will visit your child in class and meet with the SENDCo
- If your child would be helped by a photographic book to support their understanding in moving on, then one will be made for them.
- The SENDCo is available to make visits with parents to secondary schools and discuss choices if required.
- It is best if you can allow plenty of time to consider which secondary school would be best for your child; the more time you allow, the more visits we can arrange so that you fully understand all of your options. If a place at Special School is being considered, converations ideally need to begin during Year 4 in time for the process to be secure by the end of Year 5.
